Manchester's median house went up in 1962, and a third of its homes are older than 1950. On a lot of those roofs the gutters are due. Here is how a replacement works with us, and what it costs per foot.
Backed by Wood & Wood Seamless Gutters, more than 30 years in the gutter business.
When a Manchester gutter is past saving
Census figures put the median Manchester home at 1962. About one in three housing units, 9,074 of 26,724, was built before 1950, and 5,572 of those date to 1939 or earlier. Gutters rarely last as long as the house. On a Manchester house from those decades, the run you see today is probably not the first one, and it may hang on spikes driven through the gutter into fascia that has taken on water for years.
Covering a tired gutter with a guard is money spent in the wrong order. We ask a few plain questions on the call to sort that out. Does the gutter sag between hangers? Is it pulling off the board at a corner? Do the seams drip after the rain stops? Is there rust along the bottom of a steel run? A yes to any of these usually means new gutters, and we would rather tell you that before you buy a cover.
If the gutters pass, you may not need a replacement at all. Gutter Clean Pro goes over sound gutters from $18 per foot. The page on whether you need new gutters for a guard walks through the same test.
What the new run costs, line by line
A replacement quote from us has separate lines, and each one is a published per-foot rate. The gutter system line covers the new gutter, the guard and the labor to hang them. T-Rex is $25 per foot on 5-inch gutters and $29 on 6-inch. DoublePro is $30 and $34. Downspouts are measured by their own length, $14 per foot or $16 on 6-inch work, with elbows included. Taking the old gutters down and hauling them away is $1 per foot.
T-Rex is the system we usually talk through first on a replacement. Its hanger runs the full length of the gutter and doubles as the guard, so the new run is held up along its whole length instead of every couple of feet. That matters on an older fascia board that you would rather not punch full of new holes. DoublePro adds a second filtering layer for roofs that catch pine needles or seed pods. If your trees are mostly leafy, T-Rex is usually enough, and we will say so.
Deciding between 5-inch and 6-inch comes down to how much roof drains into each run. A long, steep roof face feeding one corner can overwhelm a 5-inch gutter in a hard rain. The 5-inch versus 6-inch page explains the trade, and your quote shows both prices so the choice is yours.
| Line | 5-inch | 6-inch | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-Rex system | $25/ft | $29/ft | New gutter, hanger-guard, labor |
| DoublePro system | $30/ft | $34/ft | New gutter, two-layer guard, labor |
| Downspout | $14/ft | $16/ft | Per foot of downspout, elbows included |
| Removal | $1/ft | $1/ft | Old gutters taken down and hauled |
Leaves, storm drains and a wet September
Tree canopy covers about 42.6 percent of Manchester's urban area, according to the American Forests Tree Equity Score. That is a lot of leaf litter landing on roofs each fall. The town takes leaves at the Transfer Station year round with a Recycling Permit Card, and from October 11 to December 31 it opens the Olcott Street site until dusk. Those drop-offs deal with the yard. The gutter is still up there collecting its share.
On September 25, 2026 the town put out a nor'easter advisory warning of heavy rain and gusty wind, and asked residents to clear leaves and trash from the storm drains near their property so the streets would not flood. A clogged gutter is the same problem one story up. Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour, when an old gutter full of leaves spills over the front edge and dumps its water against the foundation instead of down the spout.
A new run with the guard already on it takes the leaf-scooping chore off your list and keeps the water headed for the downspout. It will not fix a blocked storm drain on the street, so the town's advice still applies.
Older houses, the Cheney district and permits
Part of Manchester sits in the Cheney Brothers Historic District, a National Historic Landmark of about 175 acres made up of the old silk mills, workers' houses, churches, schools and Cheney family mansions. The town has a commission for that district. If your house is inside it, ask the commission about exterior work before the install date is set. We will not guess on its behalf, and we will plan around its answer.
Building permits in Manchester go through the town's Building Inspection Division and its online portal, and the town has posted that a staffing shortage may slow processing and inspections. The division's page does not say whether gutter work needs a permit, so we do not say either. Call the division if you want to be sure. For anything else, the phone is (617) 401-9301, and the path from that call to the install is laid out further down this page.
Call to install: every step
Three ways to start
- Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
- Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
- Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
Understand what you actually need
About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.
- Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
- Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
- Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
- Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
Your plan, in writing
You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.
A deposit capped at one third
Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.
Material ordered and confirmed
Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.
Scheduled with a certified installer in your county
A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.
Installed
The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.
After the install
We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:
- Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
- T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
- DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
Questions homeowners ask
How do I know my Manchester gutters need replacing rather than a guard?
Look for sagging between hangers, a corner pulling off the fascia, seams that drip after the rain stops, or rust through a steel bottom. Any one of those usually means new gutters. If none apply, a guard over the existing run may be the cheaper answer.
Does the price include taking the old gutters down?
Removal is its own line at $1 per foot, so you can see it. The gutter system line covers the new gutter, the guard and the labor. Downspouts are measured and priced separately.
Does someone come to the house to give me the quote?
No salesperson visits. We measure the roofline remotely and price it on the call at (617) 401-9301. A certified installer comes out to do the work, from the written plan you approved.
How much deposit do you take?
The deposit is capped at one third of the contract, and your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.
Which warranty comes with a T-Rex replacement?
T-Rex carries a lifetime limited manufacturing warranty and 25-year prorated limited performance coverage from Alu-Rex. The warranty page lists each system side by side.
