Nearly half of East Hartford's housing went up in the 1950s and 1960s. If your gutters date from then, or from the first re-roof after that, this page covers what a new run costs and how the job goes.

Backed by Wood & Wood Seamless Gutters, more than 30 years in the gutter business.

A 1961 median house, and gutters of a similar age

The census puts the median East Hartford home at 1961, and about 46 percent of the town's housing units were built between 1950 and 1969. Houses of that age have usually had a roof replaced at least once. The gutters often stayed put through the re-roof.

So on the phone we ask what you have now and how it behaves. A gutter that holds water in a low spot, drips at the joints, or has pulled loose at a corner will not be rescued by a cover. A run that hangs straight and drains clean can keep its job, and Gutter Clean Pro goes on top of it from $${PRICING.retrofit} per foot. We tell you which camp your house is in before any money changes hands.

Re-roofing? Do the gutters in the same season

East Hartford's Department of Permits and Inspections sets its own rules for a re-roof. Its information sheet requires an ice and water barrier running from the eave edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. It also says East Hartford is considered a high wind zone, with a minimum of six nails per shingle.

Both rules put work right at the eave, which is where the gutter hangs. If a new roof is on your list for the next year or two, it makes sense to plan the gutters in the same window, so the fascia is opened up once and the new gutter goes onto a finished edge. Tell us your roofer's schedule and we will fit around it.

The high wind note is also a reason to care how the gutter is held up. A gutter held by a spike every few feet has unsupported spans between them. T-Rex supports the gutter along its full length with one continuous hanger, which is also its guard.

The same department's permit guidance says zoning permits go with building permits for exterior changes other than siding, roofing and windows. It does not say whether gutter or guard work on its own needs a permit, and we will not claim either way. A call to the department settles it.

East Hartford replacement prices

The quote has four kinds of line, all per foot and all on the public price list. The gutter system: T-Rex at $25 for 5-inch and $29 for 6-inch, or DoublePro at $30 and $34. That number includes the gutter, the guard and the labor. Downspouts, measured down the wall, at $14 per foot or $16 for 6-inch work, elbows included. And removal of the old system at $1 per foot.

T-Rex is a single perforated layer and suits most roofs under broadleaf trees. DoublePro adds a second, finer layer underneath and is the one to pick when needles, seed pods or shingle grit reach the gutter. The per-foot gap between them is a few dollars, and we explain it on the call rather than pushing the higher one.

A 6-inch gutter moves more water than a 5-inch one. It earns its price where a big roof face drains into one run, less so on a small ranch. The 5-inch or 6-inch page has the detail, and you get both numbers to choose from.

Tree City streets and historic districts

East Hartford has held Tree City USA status from 1996 on. Trees near a roofline mean leaves in the gutter every fall. A new run with a guard on it keeps those leaves on top, where rain and wind can move them, instead of packed in the trough.

The town has four National Register historic districts: Garvan-Carroll, Central Avenue-Center Cemetery, Downtown Main Street, and Naubuc Avenue-Broad Street. It also has one local district, the Naubuc District. There, owners need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic District Commission before changing an exterior architectural feature visible from the public right-of-way. If you live in the Naubuc District, check with the Commission first. We plan the install date around its answer.

Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour, and a new gutter sized for your roof is what carries that water to the downspout. To start, call (617) 401-9301. The steps from that call to the finished install are listed further down.

Call to install: every step

Three ways to start

  • Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
  • Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
  • Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
  1. Understand what you actually need

About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.

    • Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
    • Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
    • Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
    • Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
  2. Your plan, in writing

You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.

  3. A deposit capped at one third

Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.

  4. Material ordered and confirmed

Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.

  5. Scheduled with a certified installer in your county

A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.

  6. Installed

The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.

  7. After the install

We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:

    • Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
    • T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
    • DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas

Questions homeowners ask

Should I replace gutters before or after a new roof in East Hartford?

Plan them together. The re-roof rules put new material right at the eave, so hanging the new gutter on the finished edge avoids opening the fascia twice. Tell us the roofer's date and we schedule around it.

Is removal of my old gutters included?

It is a separate line at $1 per foot, so you can see it. The system line covers the new gutter, guard and labor.

Do you send a salesperson to measure?

No. We measure the roofline remotely and price it on the call at (617) 401-9301. The certified installer who does the work follows the written plan you approved.

What is the deposit?

No more than one third of the contract. Your quote states the exact amount before you pay.

What warranty does DoublePro carry?

DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included. The warranty page lists every system's coverage.
