StormRail supplies and installs Alu-Rex gutter guards for Newington homeowners and the neighboring Hartford County towns. Over sound gutters, Gutter Clean Pro costs $18 a foot installed; new gutter with T-Rex starts at $25 a foot. Calls are answered at any hour, the price is given on the call, and a certified installer does the work from a written plan you approve first.
Newington's own town plan says drainage can be a challenge in some areas. You can't fix a street, but you can decide where your own roof water goes, and that is the job we price.

Guards, gutters and downspouts: Newington prices by the foot
A gutter guard keeps the gutter open. The downspout decides where the water lands. We price both per foot, installed, because the water still has to go somewhere once it leaves the roof.
If your gutters are sound, Gutter Clean Pro covers them at $18 a foot for 5-inch and $20 for 6-inch. It is a two-layer aluminum retrofit. Sound means the run keeps its slope toward the outlet, the seams don't drip and the hangers are tight.
If the gutters are past saving, new ones go up with the guard built in. T-Rex combines hanger and guard in one continuous aluminum piece, from $25 a foot for 5-inch or $29 for 6-inch. DoublePro adds a finer layer below for needles and seed pods, from $30 or $34. What Alu-Rex covers on each system is set out on the warranty page.
Downspout is $14 a foot on a 5-inch system and $16 on 6-inch. On a two-story house the downspout footage can come close to the gutter footage, so it gets its own line in the quote. Removal of old gutter is its own line too, at $1 a foot. There is more on runs and outlets on the downspouts page.
Which Newington house suits which system comes down to the gutter's condition and what falls on the roof. Sound gutter and leaves: the retrofit. Failing gutter: T-Rex. Failing gutter under needles: DoublePro. Water pooling at the foundation: look at the downspouts whichever guard you pick.
| Line | 5-inch system | 6-inch system |
|---|---|---|
| Gutter Clean Pro over existing gutter | $18/ft | $20/ft |
| New gutter with T-Rex | $25/ft | $29/ft |
| New gutter with DoublePro | $30/ft | $34/ft |
| Downspout | $14/ft | $16/ft |
| Old gutter removal | $1/ft | $1/ft |
Newington's post-war housing and its drainage record
The town's 2020-2030 Plan of Conservation and Development says Newington grew rapidly, especially after World War II. Its housing table shows units more than doubling, from 4,972 in 1960 to 10,445 in 1980. The census agrees: the median home was built in 1967, and about 59% of housing units (8,077 of 13,577) date from 1950 through 1979.
The same plan is frank about water: "Drainage issues can be a challenge in some areas of Newington. Much development in Newington occurred before knowledge of runoff dynamics was as evolved as it is today." The part a homeowner controls is the roof. A gutter that overflows drops water beside the foundation, and a downspout that ends at the base of the wall does the same.
The town's wet spots are on record. A 2025 Resilient Connecticut flood study for Berlin, New Britain and Newington, by CIRCA and UConn and prepared by SLR, lists Wilson Avenue at the Mill Brook crossing as a Newington priority flood site and models road flooding at Coles Avenue. Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour, when a gutter has to move the most water in the least time.
When the town wrote its own housing rehab specification, it asked for guards. A Town of Newington Housing Rehab bid, Project 094-PI-25, published in July 2026, specified seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts on all eaves and aluminum gutter guards on all newly installed gutters.
Newington has designated historic districts: Newington Junction North, South and West along Willard Avenue and West Hill Road, which are on the National Register, and the Robbin-Wells district on Robbins Avenue and Main Street, on the State Register. The Kellogg-Eddy House on Willard Avenue, from about 1808, is also on the National Register. If your house is in one of these districts, ask the town about exterior changes first.
The Building Department says a permit is needed before construction, alteration or repairs other than ordinary repairs, and it normally reviews permits in 5 to 10 working days. Its FAQ does not mention gutters, so ask before work starts. Trees on town roads, parks and town buildings belong to the Tree Warden in the Parks and Recreation Department, and the town plan calls for protecting tree canopies from unreasonable destruction by utility pruning.
What's a good price for gutter guards on a Newington house?
A good price is one you can take apart. Ours has three parts: the gutter or guard by the foot, downspout by the foot, and removal by the foot if old gutter comes down. The guard rates are $18 over existing 5-inch gutter, $25 for new gutter with T-Rex and $30 for new gutter with DoublePro.
To turn that into your total we need the roofline, which we measure remotely, the number of stories, and the trees near the roof. You get the figure on the call. The written quote shows the same lines, and the deposit is capped at one third of it. If you are comparing, ask every company for feet and a rate per foot. A lump sum tells you nothing you can check.
Where gutter guards fall short on a Newington lot
They cost money up front, and on a house with open sky over the roof they may never earn it back. We will say that on the call if it is true of your house. A guard also leaves drainage below the gutter unchanged. If water pools at the foundation, a guard on a clean gutter still sends every drop down the same downspout to the same spot.
That is a downspout and grading question, and in a town whose own plan names drainage as a challenge, it is worth asking before you buy a guard. Last, the guard has to match the debris. A single layer lets needles through, and a finer second layer is the fix where pines stand near the house. The page on guards and pine needles covers that case.
Call to install: every step
Three ways to start
- Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
- Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
- Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
Understand what you actually need
About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.
- Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
- Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
- Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
- Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
Your plan, in writing
You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.
A deposit capped at one third
Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.
Material ordered and confirmed
Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.
Scheduled with a certified installer in your county
A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.
Installed
The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.
After the install
We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:
- Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
- T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
- DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
Questions homeowners ask
Do I need a permit to add gutter guards in Newington?
The Building Department's FAQ says permits cover construction, alteration and repairs other than ordinary repairs, and it does not mention gutters. Ask the department before work starts.
A tree on the town road hangs over my gutters. Who do I call?
Newington's Tree Warden, in the Parks and Recreation Department, is responsible for trees on town roads, parks and town buildings.
Can you change where my downspouts empty?
Yes. Tell us where water pools and we plan the downspouts around it. Each foot is priced on its own line, from $14.
Does anyone come to my house before I agree to a price?
No. Call (617) 401-9301; the roofline is measured remotely and the price comes on that call. The first visit is the certified installer, on a date set after your material is confirmed.
How much do I put down?
One third of the contract at most. The exact figure is named in your written quote before you pay.
Do you install gutter covers, gutter screens or leaf guards in Newington?
Yes. Gutter covers, gutter screens, leaf guards and gutter guards are names for the same job: keeping leaves and needles out of the gutter. In Newington we install Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro over sound gutters from $18 a foot, or a new seamless gutter with T-Rex from $25 or DoublePro from $30.
