Farmington is a mostly wooded town between the Farmington River and Talcott Mountain, and much of its housing went up in the 1980s. Forty years of what falls out of those woods is what the gutters are dealing with now.

Backed by Wood & Wood Seamless Gutters, more than 30 years in the gutter business.

Picking a guard for a wooded Farmington lot

Woods drop more than leaves. Through the year a roof under trees collects seed pods, catkins, twigs, bark and needles, and an older shingle roof sheds its own grit on top of that. Leaves are the easy part, because they sit on a guard and blow off. The fine material is what gets through a single perforated layer and settles in the trough, and that is how a guarded gutter ends up full anyway.

DoublePro is built for that. It goes on with a new seamless gutter and puts a second, finer perforated aluminum layer below the first, so the small debris stays on top where the wind and rain can move it. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included. It costs $30 a foot for 5-inch and $34 for 6-inch, gutter included.

Where the trees overhead are mostly broad-leaved and the fine stuff is light, T-Rex may do the job for less. It is a continuous hanger with a perforated top, so the new gutter is held along its full length and the guard and hanger are one piece. It is $25 a foot in 5-inch and $29 in 6-inch.

If your gutters are sound, straight and dry at the joints, you do not have to replace them. Gutter Clean Pro fits on top at $18 a foot for 5-inch and $20 for 6-inch. Downspouts are priced separately by the foot, $14 to $16, and removing old gutter is $1 a foot. The pricing page lists every rate, and the T-Rex versus DoublePro page sets the two new-gutter systems side by side.

Farmington's woods, river, houses and storms

Farmington is mostly wooded. It has meadows and hills to the east and southeast, numerous ponds and lakes, the Farmington River running through from the northwest, and Talcott Mountain rising on the east side. Across 28.8 square miles, that is a lot of canopy over a lot of roofs, and it is why we ask what grows over your house before we suggest a system.

The housing is younger than its neighbours'. Census estimates put the median Farmington home at 1980, and the 1980s are the biggest decade, with about 2,600 units. About 65% of housing units are single-family detached, and another 1,225 are attached single-family houses such as townhouses. A house from the 1980s is on its second roof by now, and its gutters are often the original 5-inch aluminum, hung on spikes or hidden hangers that have been loosening for forty years. There is an older core too: about 1,200 units date from 1939 or earlier.

Storms here mean trees. Three days after Tropical Storm Isaias in August 2020, more than 77% of Farmington's Eversource customers were still without power, and many roads were blocked by fallen trees and downed lines. When limbs come down on an eave, a gutter on spikes tends to tear away in lengths, which is one more argument for a gutter carried along its whole run.

For weather, the nearest long-record NOAA station is Bradley International Airport. Its 1991-2020 normals come to 47.05 inches of precipitation a year, 51.7 inches of snow, about 12.4 days with an inch or more of rain and roughly 126 nights at or below freezing. Those are Hartford-area normals, not Farmington readings. Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour, when a gutter already holding fine debris has nowhere to put the water.

Farmington's town sections include Unionville in the northwest, East Farmington Heights, Farmington Station, Oakland Gardens, River Glen and Farmington village itself. The Farmington Historic District, which takes in parts of Main Street, Garden Street and Farmington Avenue and includes Miss Porter's School, was added to the National Register in 1972, and Main Street is lined with colonial estates. A National Register listing is not on its own a local rule, and we have not read the town's rule on exterior work. If your house is in the district, ask the town before work starts.

How much are gutter guards for a Farmington home?

All rates are per foot, installed. DoublePro with a new seamless gutter is $30 in 5-inch and $34 in 6-inch. T-Rex is $25 and $29. Gutter Clean Pro over gutters you keep is $18 and $20. Downspouts and removal of old gutter are separate lines.

The total depends on the length of your roofline and the downspouts. A townhouse end unit has a short run; a 1980s colonial with a garage and a deck roof has several. We measure the roof remotely and give you the number on the call, without a sales visit.

Why does fine debris matter more than leaves?

Leaves are big, so they stay on top of almost any guard and dry out and blow away. Fine debris is the opposite. Seed pods, catkins, needles and shingle grit slip through coarse openings, collect in the bottom of the gutter and turn into a dark sludge that blocks the outlet. A guard that lets that through still leaves you with a full gutter, just one that is harder to reach.

If you have cleaned your gutters before, think about what came out. Whole leaves point one way, black muck points the other. The pine needle question page explains how the second layer handles the small material.

How long do gutter guards last?

An aluminum guard on a properly hung gutter lasts as long as the gutter does, and each system carries its own written warranty. The parts that wear out sooner are the ones a guard cannot help: a hanger that loosens, a seam sealant that dries out, or a downspout crushed at the bottom.

That is the case for replacing old gutters and fitting the guard at the same time, rather than putting a new cover on a forty-year-old gutter. The warranty page sets the three warranties side by side, and the how long do gutter guards last page goes into more detail.

Call to install: every step

Three ways to start

  • Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
  • Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
  • Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
  1. Understand what you actually need

About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.

    • Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
    • Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
    • Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
    • Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
  2. Your plan, in writing

You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.

  3. A deposit capped at one third

Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.

  4. Material ordered and confirmed

Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.

  5. Scheduled with a certified installer in your county

A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.

  6. Installed

The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.

  7. After the install

We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:

    • Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
    • T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
    • DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas

Questions homeowners ask

Do you send a salesperson to Farmington?

No. Call (617) 401-9301 and we measure your roof remotely and price it on that call. A certified installer comes out when there is approved work, following the written plan.

Why lead with DoublePro in Farmington?

Because a wooded lot drops a lot of fine debris, and DoublePro's second, finer layer stops what a single screen lets through. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty with pine needles included. If your trees drop mostly broad leaves, T-Rex costs less.

I live in Unionville. Is that covered?

Yes. Unionville is part of Farmington, and the rates are the same everywhere in town and across Connecticut.

My house is on Main Street in the historic district. Do I need approval?

We have not read Farmington's rule on exterior work, and a National Register listing is not a local rule on its own. Ask the town before work starts, and the installer will plan around its answer.

Can a guard go on the gutters I already have?

If they are sound, yes. Gutter Clean Pro goes over existing gutters from $18 a foot. If they sag, leak or are pulling away, we will say so and price new ones.

Do you install gutter covers, gutter screens or leaf guards in Farmington?

Yes. Gutter covers, gutter screens, leaf guards and gutter guards are names for the same job: keeping leaves and needles out of the gutter. In Farmington we install Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro over sound gutters from $18 a foot, or a new seamless gutter with T-Rex from $25 or DoublePro from $30.
