Nearly half of Avon's houses were built in the 1970s and 1980s, in a valley between Talcott Mountain and the Farmington River. Some of those gutters have years left in them and some do not, and the right guard depends on which you have.

Keep your gutters or replace them: the three options for an Avon house

The cheapest good outcome is keeping the gutters you have. Many houses get new gutters with a re-roof, and if yours were done in the last ten or fifteen years and are straight, pitched to the downspouts and dry at the corners, there is no reason to tear them off. Gutter Clean Pro is the guard for that case. It fits over the existing gutter and keeps leaves out, at $18 a foot for 5-inch and $20 for 6-inch.

If the gutters are the originals from a 1970s or 1980s build, look harder. Spikes work loose, seams open, and a run that has been holding wet leaves every autumn for decades often sags between hangers. A guard on top of that is money on a gutter that will not last. Then the better buy is a new seamless gutter with the guard built in. T-Rex is a continuous hanger with a perforated top that holds the gutter along its whole length, at $25 a foot in 5-inch and $29 in 6-inch.

DoublePro is the same idea with a second, finer layer underneath, for roofs that collect seed pods, catkins, needles or heavy shingle grit. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included. It is $30 a foot in 5-inch and $34 in 6-inch.

Downspouts are a separate line at $14 to $16 a foot, and removing old gutter is $1 a foot. On the call we will tell you which of the three we would choose for your house and why. If we think your gutters are fine, we will say so. The full list is on the pricing page, and the page on whether you need new gutters walks through the checks.

Avon's houses, ridge and river

Avon's housing came in one main wave. Census estimates put the median home at 1979, and the 1970s are the biggest decade with about 2,100 units. The 1970s and 1980s together account for close to half of all housing in town. About 72% of housing units are single-family detached houses. A house from that wave has almost certainly had a new roof, and the question we ask first is whether the gutters were replaced with it.

The town sits between two landmarks. Its east side is flanked by Talcott Mountain on the Metacomet Ridge, and its west side by the Farmington River. In between are the villages of Avon and West Avon, with Horse Guard State Park, the Huckleberry Hill Recreation Area and the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. Avon was originally part of neighboring Farmington, and it covers 23.5 square miles.

Trees are part of the storm record. After Tropical Storm Isaias in August 2020, most homes in Avon were still without power the next day, and the town said fallen trees had brought down the lines. When a limb lands on an eave, a gutter on spikes tends to pull away in sections, while a gutter carried on a continuous hanger has support along its full length.

The nearest long-record NOAA station is Bradley International Airport. Its 1991-2020 normals give 47.05 inches of precipitation a year, 51.7 inches of snow, about 12.4 days with an inch or more of rain and roughly 126 nights at or below freezing. Those are Hartford-area normals, not an Avon measurement. Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour, when a gutter that is half full of last autumn's leaves runs out of room in minutes.

We have not read an Avon rule on gutter work, for permits or for historic properties. If your house is a designated historic property or you are unsure, check with the town before the installer arrives, and the plan will follow what they say.

What does it cost to add gutter guards in Avon?

Over gutters you keep, Gutter Clean Pro is $18 a foot for 5-inch and $20 for 6-inch, installed. With a new seamless gutter, T-Rex is $25 and $29, and DoublePro is $30 and $34. Downspouts and removal are listed on their own lines.

Multiply by your roofline and add the downspouts. A raised ranch is mostly two long runs; a colonial with an attached garage has more corners and longer drops. We measure the roof remotely, so you hear the number on the first call and nobody visits to sell.

How do I know if my gutters are good enough for a guard?

Walk around the house after a rain. Water standing in a run means the pitch is off. Drip stains or streaks under the corners and seams mean leaks. A gutter that has pulled away from the fascia, or that moves when you push it, has loose hangers. Any one of those is fixable; all three together usually mean replacing.

Then look at the material. Thin, dented or rusted gutters are not worth covering. If you are not sure, tell us on the call what you see, and we will give you a straight answer. If they can stay, a guard on top is the cheaper route.

Are gutter guards better than cleaning the gutters every year?

It comes down to how often you would clean them and who would do it. On a lot with heavy tree cover, gutters can need clearing more than once a fall, and every time means a ladder at the eave. A guard keeps most of that debris out for good, though leaves can still sit on top where the wind does not reach.

StormRail does not offer gutter cleaning; we install guards and gutters. The guards versus cleaning page compares the two honestly, including when a guard is not worth it.

Call to install: every step

Three ways to start

  • Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
  • Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
  • Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
  1. Understand what you actually need

About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.

    • Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
    • Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
    • Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
    • Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
  2. Your plan, in writing

You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.

  3. A deposit capped at one third

Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.

  4. Material ordered and confirmed

Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.

  5. Scheduled with a certified installer in your county

A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.

  6. Installed

The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.

  7. After the install

We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:

    • Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
    • T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
    • DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas

Questions homeowners ask

Will someone come to my Avon house to sell me guards?

No. We measure your roof remotely and give you the price when you call (617) 401-9301. A certified installer comes out when there is approved work, following the written plan.

Why do you lead with Gutter Clean Pro in Avon?

Because many houses here have had a new roof, and often new gutters with it. If yours are sound, keeping them and adding a guard on top costs the least. If they are worn, we will say so and price new gutters.

Do you cover West Avon?

Yes. West Avon is part of Avon, and the per-foot rates are the same everywhere in town and across Connecticut.

Do I need a permit for gutter guards in Avon?

We have not read an Avon rule that covers gutters. Check with the town before work starts, and the installer will work to its answer.

How soon can you install?

In season we typically book four to six weeks out. The material is ordered and confirmed before you get a date, so the date holds.

Do you install gutter covers, gutter screens or leaf guards in Avon?

Yes. Gutter covers, gutter screens, leaf guards and gutter guards are names for the same job: keeping leaves and needles out of the gutter. In Avon we install Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro over sound gutters from $18 a foot, or a new seamless gutter with T-Rex from $25 or DoublePro from $30.
