StormRail installs Alu-Rex gutter guards on Newton homes. Gutter Clean Pro goes over sound gutters from $18/ft. A new seamless gutter with T-Rex starts at $25/ft and with DoublePro at $30/ft. You get the price on the first call, at any hour, with no sales visit. A certified installer working in Middlesex County fits the job from the plan you approved in writing.
Newton is an old city. Almost half of its housing was built in 1939 or earlier, and on a house that age the gutters may have been replaced once or more. So the first question in Newton is whether the gutters you have now are worth keeping.
Backed by Wood & Wood Seamless Gutters, more than 30 years in the gutter business.
Keep your gutters or replace them: the three choices in Newton
Start with the gutters already on the house. If they run straight, drain to the downspouts and stay dry at the seams, they can stay. In that case Gutter Clean Pro goes on top of them. It is a two-layer aluminum guard that fits the gutter you own, and it costs $18 a foot over 5-inch gutters and $20 over 6-inch. This is the least you can spend and still stop filling the gutter every fall.
If the gutters sag between hangers, leak at the corners or have been patched more than once, a guard on top is money spent on a gutter that will fail anyway. Then the better buy is a new seamless gutter with T-Rex. T-Rex is one continuous aluminum piece that holds the gutter along its full length and covers it at the same time, so there are no spikes driven through every couple of feet to work loose. It runs $25 a foot in 5-inch and $29 in 6-inch.
Some lots drop fine debris: seed pods, catkins, needles from a stray pine, grit off an old roof. For those, DoublePro adds a finer second layer under the T-Rex top. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included. It is $30 a foot in 5-inch and $34 in 6-inch.
Everything else is priced on its own line. Downspouts run $14 to $16 a foot by size, and taking old gutter down is $1 a foot. The rates on the call match the pricing page word for word, and if your gutters will not outlast a guard, you will hear that on the call too.
| When your gutters are | System | 5-inch | 6-inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sound and draining | Gutter Clean Pro over them | $18/ft | $20/ft |
| Sagging, leaking or patched | New gutter with T-Rex | $25/ft | $29/ft |
| Under seed pods or needles | New gutter with DoublePro | $30/ft | $34/ft |
Newton's old houses, its villages and its trees
Census estimates count 33,959 housing units in Newton, and 16,583 of them, almost half, were built in 1939 or earlier. The median home dates from 1942. About 55% of the housing is single-family detached, and close to 7,000 units sit in buildings of two to four units. On a house that old the gutter may not be the original, which is why we ask about its condition before suggesting you keep it.
Newton is a city of 13 villages: Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newton Centre, Newton Corner, Newton Highlands, Newton Lower Falls, Newton Upper Falls, Newtonville, Nonantum, Oak Hill, Thompsonville, Waban and West Newton. The Charles River runs along its north and west sides. The city borders Waltham and Watertown, Wellesley and Weston, Needham, Brookline, and the Brighton and West Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston.
Newton is known as The Garden City, and it protects its street trees. Several roads are designated scenic, and on those the rules aim to curb tree removal and trimming. The trees stay, and so do the leaves in the gutters below them. When the March 2, 2018 storm came through, more than 1,200 Eversource accounts in Newton lost power at the peak, with tree limbs and power lines down around the city, and 969 were still dark the next afternoon. A gutter held on by a spike every two feet is the first thing a falling limb pulls off a house.
Four parts of the city are Local Historic Districts: Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newton Upper Falls and Newtonville. A district does not cover the whole village. Inside one, the city says any exterior change to a building needs an application to its Historic District Commission. Exact in-kind work or ordinary maintenance may get staff approval instead of a full hearing, and work not visible from a public way can get a Certificate of Non-Applicability.
For weather, the nearest long-record NOAA station is Boston Logan, about 10 miles east at the harbor. Its 1991-2020 normals show 43.59 inches of precipitation a year, 49.2 inches of snow, 10.2 days with an inch or more of rain and about 92 nights at or below freezing. Those are Logan figures, not a Newton measurement, but they show the two things a gutter here has to handle: a dozen hard rains and a real winter.
How much do gutter guards cost in Newton?
Per foot, installed: Gutter Clean Pro over your existing gutters is $18 in 5-inch and $20 in 6-inch. A new gutter with T-Rex is $25 and $29, and with DoublePro $30 and $34. Downspouts and removal of old gutter are separate lines.
Your total depends on the length of the roofline, the number of stories and what grows over the roof. We measure the roof remotely, so the number comes on the call. Nobody visits to sell. The certified installer comes once, with the plan you approved.
Can a two-family or triple-decker get gutter guards?
Yes. The systems are the same and so is the rate per foot. What changes is the height and the length of the run, and both go into the measurement before you hear a number. A three-story eave is also the strongest reason to stop climbing up to clear a gutter by hand.
If you own one unit in a condo building, check who owns the gutters before you book. In many associations that is the board. If you own the whole building and rent part of it, tell us who will be home to open a gate or move a car on the day.
Will a guard cope with a Newton winter?
A guard keeps leaves out so the gutter is open when the snow melts. It does not stop ice dams, which start on the roof above the gutter when heat from the house melts snow that refreezes at the cold edge. A gutter packed with wet leaves makes that worse, because the meltwater has nowhere to go.
With T-Rex the hanger is the guard, one continuous rail along the whole gutter, so snow load is spread along the run instead of hanging on a few spikes. The ice dam question page goes further, and the winter page covers snow sliding off the roof.
Call to install: every step
Three ways to start
- Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
- Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
- Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
Understand what you actually need
About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.
- Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
- Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
- Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
- Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
Your plan, in writing
You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.
A deposit capped at one third
Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.
Material ordered and confirmed
Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.
Scheduled with a certified installer in your county
A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.
Installed
The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.
After the install
We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:
- Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
- T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
- DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
Questions homeowners ask
Will a salesperson come to my Newton house?
No. We measure your roof remotely and give you the price when you call (617) 401-9301. The certified installer comes to do the work you approved in writing.
Do I need approval for gutters in a Newton historic district?
The city's page says any exterior change in Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newton Upper Falls or Newtonville districts needs an application, and exact in-kind work may get staff approval. It does not mention gutters by name, so ask the city's preservation planners before work starts and we will plan around their answer.
Do you work in every Newton village?
Yes. The rate per foot is the same in Newton Centre, West Newton, Chestnut Hill, Waban, Auburndale and the rest of the city.
Why keep my old gutters?
Because a sound gutter still has years left, and Gutter Clean Pro on top costs less than replacing it. If yours are sagging or leaking, a guard will not fix that, and you will hear so on the call.
When could the work be done?
In season we typically book four to six weeks out. The material is ordered and confirmed before you get a date, so the date holds.
Do you install gutter covers, gutter screens or leaf guards in Newton?
Yes. Gutter covers, gutter screens, leaf guards and gutter guards are names for the same job: keeping leaves and needles out of the gutter. In Newton we install Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro over sound gutters from $18 a foot, or a new seamless gutter with T-Rex from $25 or DoublePro from $30.
