StormRail stops pine and spruce needles on East Hampton homes with two-layer Alu-Rex guards: DoublePro with new gutters from $30/ft, or Gutter Clean Pro on sound gutters from $18/ft, installed. Your call is answered any hour and priced that day, and a certified installer working in Middlesex County fits the job from the written plan you approved.
East Hampton shares Meshomasic State Forest with four other towns, and its Big Pines plantation holds white pine and Norway spruce more than a century old. Conifer needles call for a finer guard than leaves do. Here is the choice, with prices.
Backed by Wood & Wood Seamless Gutters, more than 30 years in the gutter business.
Belltown's conifers and the gutter below them
Meshomasic State Forest was the first state forest in Connecticut and in New England when it was set up in 1903. It now covers more than 9,000 acres across Portland, East Hampton, Glastonbury, Marlborough and Hebron. The Big Pines plantation inside it holds white pines and Norway spruce that are more than 100 years old.
East Hampton itself runs to about 36.8 square miles and takes in Cobalt, Middle Haddam and Lake Pocotopaug. Four in five of its homes, 80.7 percent, are single-unit detached houses, each with its own roofline and its own trees. We do not know what grows over yours until you tell us. If the answer includes pine or spruce close to the eaves, read on.
Why one screen is not enough under conifers
Conifer needles are narrow and stiff. A single-layer guard with openings sized for leaves lets them drop through point first. They lie flat in the trough, trap the next load, and within a season or two the gutter holds a damp mat that water runs over instead of through.
A two-layer guard deals with that by offsetting the openings. The top sheet turns most needles away. Whatever passes it lands on a second perforated sheet with holes in different places, and the water goes on through while the needle stays up top. Alu-Rex makes two systems built this way, one for new gutters and one for gutters you keep.
Needles that stay on top of a guard can still build up where wind does not reach, such as behind a dormer or under a low branch. They are on the surface there, not in the trough, where the next hard rain can wash them off.
DoublePro or Gutter Clean Pro, and what each costs
DoublePro replaces the gutter. You get a new gutter, a continuous hanger along its whole length and two filter layers, installed for $30 per foot on 5-inch or $34 on 6-inch. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included.
Gutter Clean Pro keeps your gutters and adds the two layers on top, from $18 per foot on 5-inch and $20 on 6-inch. The Alu-Rex sheet for Gutter Clean Pro gives lifetime limited performance coverage, including coniferous areas. It is the right call when the existing gutter is straight, drains, and does not leak.
The other lines are the same on either path. Downspouts cost $14 per foot, or $16 on 6-inch work, with elbows included. Removing old gutters for a DoublePro job is $1 per foot. T-Rex, our single-layer system, is priced lower, and we steer East Hampton callers with needles away from it.
| System | Gutters | 5-inch | 6-inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| DoublePro | New | $30/ft | $34/ft |
| Gutter Clean Pro | Existing, sound | $18/ft | $20/ft |
Storms, older houses and Middle Haddam
Statewide, the 2011 Halloween nor'easter left more than 700,000 Connecticut residents without power, some for over a week, and dropped 12.3 inches of snow on Hartford. Connecticut also logged its highest count of extreme precipitation events in the 2005 to 2014 decade. Those are state figures, not East Hampton ones. Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour, when a gutter lined with needles has nowhere to put the water.
About 17.5 percent of East Hampton's housing units were built in 1939 or earlier. On an older house we check the gutter before we price a retrofit, because a cover on a failing run is wasted money.
In the Middle Haddam Historic District, any exterior construction or alteration visible from a public street needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit is applied for. Replacing materials with identical ones is exempt, and the Commission decides what is exempt. If you live there, ask the Commission first. East Hampton's Building Department takes permit applications online through Permit Link.

Call to install: every step
Three ways to start
- Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
- Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
- Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
Understand what you actually need
About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.
- Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
- Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
- Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
- Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
Your plan, in writing
You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.
A deposit capped at one third
Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.
Material ordered and confirmed
Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.
Scheduled with a certified installer in your county
A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.
Installed
The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.
After the install
We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:
- Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
- T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
- DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
Questions homeowners ask
Do spruce needles clog gutter guards the way pine needles do?
Both are narrow enough to pass a single coarse screen. A two-layer guard like DoublePro or Gutter Clean Pro is the match for either.
My East Hampton gutters are fine. Do I have to replace them?
No. If they hang straight, drain and do not leak, Gutter Clean Pro goes over them from $18 per foot.
I live in Middle Haddam. Can you still install?
Yes, once the Historic District Commission has said what it needs. Visible exterior work there needs a Certificate of Appropriateness unless the Commission rules it exempt, so start with them.
Does anyone come out before I decide?
Not to sell. The roofline is measured remotely and priced on the call at (617) 401-9301. The certified installer arrives for the job itself.
What do I pay up front?
A deposit of no more than one third of the contract, named on your written quote.
