StormRail quotes Alu-Rex gutter guards for Portland and nearby Middlesex County towns on the first call. Over sound gutters, Gutter Clean Pro costs $18 per foot. With new gutters, T-Rex is $25 and DoublePro $30 per foot, installed. Call at any hour. The plan you approve in writing is the plan the certified installer works from.
Half of Portland's edge is the Connecticut River, and the rest runs up into the pines of Meshomasic. Many of the houses are older than the suburbs around them. Call once and we price the gutter work on that call.

Portland roofs and the three Alu-Rex systems
Picture two houses. One is a ranch on a cleared lot, its gutters still straight. The other sits under tall pines, and its gutters have held a wet mat of needles every spring for years. They need different things, and the price list reflects that.
For the ranch, Gutter Clean Pro is the sensible call. It is a two-layer aluminum cover that goes on top of the gutter you already own, provided the gutter is level, tight at the seams and draining. It costs $18 per foot on 5-inch gutters and $20 on 6-inch.
For the house under the pines, we usually suggest DoublePro on a new gutter. The gutter hangs from a continuous hanger, and two perforated layers sit on top. Needles that slide through the upper layer land on the lower one and stay out of the trough. It costs $30 per foot for 5-inch and $34 for 6-inch. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included.
Between those two sits T-Rex. It is a new gutter with a continuous hanger and a single perforated top, built for broad leaves more than needles. It runs $25 per foot for 5-inch and $29 for 6-inch. If your gutters are failing and your trees are oaks and maples, it is often the better value.
On any of the three, downspouts are their own line at $14 to $16 per foot, and taking the old gutters down is $1 per foot. A house with a steep lot or a walk-out basement can carry a lot of downspout, which is why we price it apart. The pricing page has the whole list.
| System | Gutter | 5-inch | 6-inch | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DoublePro | New | $30/ft | $34/ft | Lots under pine and spruce |
| T-Rex | New | $25/ft | $29/ft | Failing gutters under hardwoods |
| Gutter Clean Pro | Kept | $18/ft | $20/ft | Straight, sound gutters |
An older town between the river and the forest
Portland's houses skew older than the county around them. Of the town's 4,100 housing units, 3,338 are single-family detached, 985 were built in 1939 or earlier, and the median home dates from 1961. On a house that old, the fascia and trim behind the gutter may have been repaired more than once. We ask about it on the call, and a phone photo helps.
Meshomasic State Forest, begun in 1903 as the first state forest in Connecticut and New England, spreads over more than 9,000 acres of Portland and four other towns. Its Big Pines plantation holds white pines and Norway spruce more than a century old. That is the reason DoublePro leads this page.
Water shapes the town too. About half of Portland's perimeter is the Connecticut River. The quarries here sent brownstone to Hartford for the Old State House in 1796, and the 1936 flood effectively ended that industry. In December 2023 a major rainstorm pushed the river to levels rarely seen that time of year, and WTNH reported that Route 17A in Portland was underwater. A gutter cannot hold back a river. It can move the rain off your own roof and away from your foundation, and that job gets harder in a storm like that one. Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour.
On permits: since January 1, 2026, Portland's Building Department issues each permit on its own through the SmartGov system, with no blanket permits. A roof replacement over 25% of the roof area needs one. Gutters are not on the town's permit list. If you are redoing the roof as well, that part needs its own permit, and your roofer should pull it.
How much should I expect to pay for gutter guards in Portland?
Work it out per foot. StormRail's installed rates are the same across Connecticut: $18 for Gutter Clean Pro over an existing 5-inch gutter, $25 for a new 5-inch gutter with T-Rex, and $30 for a new 5-inch gutter with DoublePro. For 6-inch gutters, the rates are $20, $29 and $34. Downspout and removal are extra lines, priced by the foot.
The footage is what changes from house to house. A long, low ranch can have more eave than a taller Colonial with a smaller footprint, and a two-story house needs longer downspouts. We measure your roofline remotely before or during the call, so the figure you hear is for your house. You get it in writing, one line per item. If you want to see what else drives the number, the cost page breaks it down.
What is the downside of gutter guards on an older house?
The price is the obvious one. A guard adds to the job, and if no tree reaches your roof you may be paying to solve a problem you do not have. We say so when that is the case.
The less obvious one is what a guard hides. On a gutter that is already sagging or rotting the board behind it, a cover makes the trouble harder to see. That is why we ask about the gutter's condition before we quote Gutter Clean Pro, and why we price new gutters when the old ones have had their day. Debris can also sit on top of any guard until wind clears it. A guard needs far less attention than an open gutter, but it still needs a look now and then. For the comparison with just cleaning the gutters, see gutter guards vs gutter cleaning.
Call to install: every step
Three ways to start
- Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
- Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
- Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
Understand what you actually need
About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.
- Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
- Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
- Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
- Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
Your plan, in writing
You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.
A deposit capped at one third
Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.
Material ordered and confirmed
Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.
Scheduled with a certified installer in your county
A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.
Installed
The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.
After the install
We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:
- Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
- T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
- DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
Questions homeowners ask
Does gutter work need a permit in Portland?
Gutters are not on Portland's permit list. A roof replacement covering more than 25% of the roof does need one, filed on its own through SmartGov.
Can I get a price without anyone coming to the house?
Yes. Call (617) 401-9301, give us the address, and we measure the roofline remotely and price it on the call. The certified installer visits to do the job, working from the written plan you approved.
Which guard handles white pine needles?
DoublePro. Its second perforated layer catches needles that pass through the first. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included.
How big is the deposit?
It is capped at one third of the contract, and the quote tells you the exact figure before you pay.
My gutters are fine. Do I have to replace them?
No. If they are sound, Gutter Clean Pro goes over them at $18 per foot for 5-inch. Do I need new gutters for gutter guards? explains how to tell.
Do you install gutter covers, gutter screens or leaf guards in Portland?
Yes. Gutter covers, gutter screens, leaf guards and gutter guards are names for the same job: keeping leaves and needles out of the gutter. In Portland we install Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro over sound gutters from $18 a foot, or a new seamless gutter with T-Rex from $25 or DoublePro from $30.
