Gutter guards in New Canaan, CT

New Canaan roofs sit under big trees. A gutter that is held along its whole length stands up to them better.

From $25/ft installed · T-Rex

Call (617) 401-9301Answered any hour · no in-home sales pitch

StormRail installs Alu-Rex gutter guards on New Canaan homes. T-Rex comes with a new gutter from $25/ft, DoublePro from $30/ft, and Gutter Clean Pro fits over sound gutters from $18/ft. The phone is answered any hour and you hear the price on that first call. A certified installer working in Fairfield County fits the job to the written plan you approved.

When Tropical Storm Isaias came through in 2020, most of New Canaan woke up without power because trees and limbs had come down on the lines. Those same trees stand over the town's roofs and drop into its gutters every fall.

Backed by Wood & Wood Seamless Gutters, more than 30 years in the gutter business.

Three systems, matched to a New Canaan roof and the trees over it

Under heavy tree cover, two things wear a gutter out: the weight of wet leaves sitting in it, and branches that come down on it. That is why we usually start with T-Rex on a wooded lot. It replaces the gutter's hangers with one continuous aluminum rail that also forms the guard. The gutter is carried along its full length, not hung from spikes that loosen a little every winter. With the new gutter included, T-Rex is $25 a foot in 5-inch and $29 in 6-inch.

If the trees over your house include pines, or ones that drop seed pods and catkins, DoublePro is the better match. It adds a second perforated aluminum layer below the first, fine enough to keep needles and grit out of the trough. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included. It costs $30 a foot in 5-inch and $34 in 6-inch.

Some houses already have good gutters, and for those there is Gutter Clean Pro. It goes on top of what is there, as long as the gutter is straight, drains to its outlets and holds at the seams. The price is $18 a foot for 5-inch and $20 for 6-inch. If your gutters are past that point, we will say so on the call instead of selling you a cover for them.

Downspouts are their own line, $14 to $16 a foot, since a tall house can carry nearly as much downspout as gutter. Removing old gutter is $1 a foot when it has to come down. The full list is on the pricing page, and it is the same list every caller hears.

New Canaan's trees, houses and weather

Start with the storm. The morning after Tropical Storm Isaias in August 2020, Eversource counted 83.1% of New Canaan households, 7,057 in all, without power. The cause was fallen trees and limbs, and the First Selectman said the winds had downed many trees and power lines. A town where that happens has a lot of mature trees close to its houses. For gutters, that means a heavy leaf load every autumn and a real chance of a limb landing on the roof edge.

Then the houses. About 73% of New Canaan's 7,747 housing units are single-family detached houses, by Census estimates. The median one was built in 1967, and the 1960s are the town's biggest building decade, with close to 1,500 housing units. More than 1,400 others date from before 1940. Many gutters on 1960s houses are original or one replacement in, and they are often the 5-inch size that was standard then.

New Canaan also has some unusual roofs. From the late 1940s to roughly the 1960s it was a center of the modern design movement, and about 80 modern houses were built, of which about 20 have since been torn down. A modern house rarely has the eaves of a Colonial. If yours is one of them, send photos of the roof edges when you call so we can tell you honestly whether one of our systems fits it.

The town is set back from the water. It is bounded by Darien to the south, Stamford to the west, Wilton to the east and Norwalk to the southeast, with Lewisboro and Pound Ridge, New York, to the north. It is the one town on the Connecticut Panhandle that does not touch the coast. The nearest long-record NOAA station, at Bridgeport Sikorsky Memorial Airport, sits right on the shore. Its 1991-2020 normals are 44.09 inches of precipitation, 33.6 inches of snow, 10.3 days with an inch or more of rain and about 92 nights at or below freezing. Those are Bridgeport figures, not New Canaan readings, and inland winters here may well run harder than the shore's.

Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour, when leaves already matted on top of a guard turn the water away before it reaches the openings. Under a canopy like New Canaan's, that is the failure to plan for, and it is why we ask what grows over your roof before we name a system.

If you live in or near God's Acre, check with the town's Historic District Commission before any exterior work. The district grew out of Church Hill and was set up in 1963, and the commission takes applications for a Certificate of Appropriateness. The town's page does not say whether gutters need one, so ask the commission first and we will work to its answer.

How much are gutter guards in New Canaan?

We charge by the foot, installed, and the rates are the same in every town. T-Rex with a new gutter is $25 for 5-inch and $29 for 6-inch. DoublePro is $30 and $34. Gutter Clean Pro on gutters you keep is $18 and $20.

The total depends on the length of the roofline, the number of stories and how many downspouts the house needs. We measure remotely, so you get a figure on the call. The written quote breaks out gutter, downspout and removal so you can see where the money goes.

Do gutter guards work under heavy tree cover?

Yes, if the guard matches the debris. Big leaves are too large to pass through a perforated top, so they stay outside the trough. The risk is fine material, such as needles, seed pods and shingle grit, getting through a coarse screen and settling in the trough, where you cannot easily reach it. That is the case for DoublePro's second layer.

No guard makes a gutter maintenance-free under a canopy. Leaves can pile up in a corner where the wind does not reach. What a good guard does is keep the trough open, so the water still has somewhere to go. The pine needle question page goes further.

Can a guard stop a falling branch from damaging my gutter?

No. Nothing fitted to a gutter will stop a big limb, and we will not tell you otherwise. What you can choose is how the gutter is held up. A gutter on spikes depends on a fastener every couple of feet, and each one is a point that can work loose over the winters. T-Rex carries the gutter on one continuous rail instead.

What each system's written warranty covers, and what it does not, is set out side by side on the warranty page.

Call to install: every step

Three ways to start

  • Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
  • Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
  • Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
  1. Understand what you actually need

About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.

    • Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
    • Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
    • Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
    • Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
  2. Your plan, in writing

You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.

  3. A deposit capped at one third

Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.

  4. Material ordered and confirmed

Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.

  5. Scheduled with a certified installer in your county

A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.

  6. Installed

The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.

  7. After the install

We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:

    • Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
    • T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
    • DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas

Questions homeowners ask

Do you send a salesperson to New Canaan to quote?

No. Call (617) 401-9301, we measure the roofline remotely and give you the price on that call. A certified installer visits once you have approved a written plan.

Which guard suits a lot full of oaks and maples?

T-Rex usually does, on a new gutter, because broad leaves are too big to pass its perforated top. If there are pines too, look at DoublePro, which carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included.

Can you fit guards on a mid-century modern house?

Sometimes. Modern rooflines vary a lot, so send photos of the roof edges when you call and we will tell you straight whether one of our systems fits.

Is New Canaan's weather really like Bridgeport's?

Not exactly. Bridgeport's NOAA station is on the shore and New Canaan is inland, so its winters may be harder. We quote the station only to give a sense of the region's rain and snow.

How long until the work is done?

In season we usually book four to six weeks out. The material is ordered and confirmed before you get a date, so the installer can keep it.

Do you install gutter covers, gutter screens or leaf guards in New Canaan?

Yes. Gutter covers, gutter screens, leaf guards and gutter guards are names for the same job: keeping leaves and needles out of the gutter. In New Canaan we install Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro over sound gutters from $18 a foot, or a new seamless gutter with T-Rex from $25 or DoublePro from $30.
