StormRail fits Alu-Rex gutter guards on Darien homes. New gutters with T-Rex start at $25/ft and with DoublePro at $30/ft, and Gutter Clean Pro goes over sound existing gutters from $18/ft. Call any hour and the price comes on that call. A certified installer working in Fairfield County fits the job from the written plan you signed off on.
In the summer of 2021, Darien had two storms in eight weeks that each dropped more rain in a night than many towns see in a month. On a house built before the war, that is a hard test for any gutter.

New gutter or a guard on the old one: choosing for a Darien roof
On older houses we usually start with T-Rex, and the reason is structural. T-Rex is not a cover added to a gutter. It is the hanger, a continuous aluminum rail with a perforated top that runs the length of a new seamless gutter. That means no spikes and no brackets every two feet, and no gap for leaves to slip under. Installed with the gutter, it is $25 a foot in 5-inch and $29 a foot in 6-inch.
Size matters more in Darien than in most places. A 6-inch gutter carries a good deal more water than a 5-inch one, and the downspouts that go with it are larger too. On a big roof, or below a valley where two slopes meet, it is often the step up to 6-inch that stops the overflow, not the guard on top. We look at the roof on the call and tell you which size the run needs.
DoublePro is the same idea with a second perforated aluminum layer underneath. That layer catches what gets through a single screen: pine needles, seed pods and the grit that washes off asphalt shingles. It costs $30 a foot in 5-inch and $34 in 6-inch. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included.
If your gutters are recent and in good order, you may not need new ones at all. Gutter Clean Pro goes over existing gutters that are straight, tight at the seams and draining properly. It costs $18 a foot for 5-inch and $20 for 6-inch. Downspouts are priced separately at $14 to $16 a foot, and taking down old gutter is $1 a foot. Every rate is on the pricing page.
| System | What it is | 5-inch | 6-inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-Rex | New gutter with a full-length hanger-guard | $25/ft | $29/ft |
| DoublePro | New gutter, hanger-guard plus a second fine layer | $30/ft | $34/ft |
| Gutter Clean Pro | Guard over your existing sound gutter | $18/ft | $20/ft |
Darien houses, Darien storms
Darien is a town of houses. Census estimates put about 85% of its 7,675 housing units as single-family detached, and the median one was built in 1956. More Darien housing dates from 1939 or earlier, about 2,100 units, than from any decade since. A house that old has outlived several gutter systems. The one up there now may be a replacement from the 1980s, hung on spikes, sized at 5 inches because that was standard, and never re-pitched after a re-roof.
The town's neighborhoods differ, and so do the roofs. Noroton Heights, which historically housed the people who worked on the old estates, has densely built streets of modest Capes and colonials. A Cape has short eaves and dormers, so its gutters are short runs taking water from steep slopes. A big colonial has long runs and more downspout. Darien sits between Stamford to the west, New Canaan to the north and Norwalk to the east, with Long Island Sound along its southern edge.
Then there is the summer of 2021. On July 9, Tropical Storm Elsa put 6.25 to 7.5 inches of rain on Darien in about four hours. The First Selectman called it flooding of historic proportions, and numerous roads were flooded and impassable. Less than two months later, Ida dropped more than 8 inches between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. The town's Code Red message called that one catastrophic, and Tokeneke Road near the I-95 ramps and Casement Street were closed.
Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour, and Darien has had two of the hardest in recent memory. In rain like that, a guard with small openings and a lot of surface tension can shed water straight over the front edge. And no guard can make a 5-inch gutter carry what a 6-inch one would. That is why we ask about the gutter and the downspouts before the guard.
For a normal year, the nearest long-record NOAA station is Bridgeport Sikorsky Memorial Airport, east along the coast. Its 1991-2020 normals show 44.09 inches of precipitation, 33.6 inches of snow, 10.3 days with an inch or more of rain, and about 92 nights at or below freezing. Those numbers are for the Bridgeport area, not measured in Darien, but they give a fair picture of the coast here.
What does it cost to put gutter guards on a Darien house?
The rate is per foot, installed. New gutters with T-Rex are $25 a foot for 5-inch and $29 for 6-inch. DoublePro is $30 and $34. Gutter Clean Pro over gutters you keep is $18 and $20. Downspout and removal are their own lines, so the quote shows what each part costs.
Your total is the rate times the length of the roofline, plus the downspouts. We measure that remotely and give you the number on the call. Nobody comes to the house to sell you anything. A certified installer comes when there is approved work to do.
Should I go to 6-inch gutters?
If water pours over the gutter in a heavy rain even when it is clean, probably yes. A bigger gutter and bigger downspouts carry more water, which matters below roof valleys and on long, steep slopes. It costs a little more per foot, and on many older Darien houses it fixes the overflow the guard is blamed for.
If your gutters only overflow when they are full of leaves, size is not the problem, and a guard on the right gutter will do. The 5-inch versus 6-inch question page goes into the difference, and the overflow page covers the other causes.
Do I need new gutters to get gutter guards?
No, not if the ones you have are sound. Gutter Clean Pro is made to go over existing gutters. But a lot of the gutters we hear about on older houses are not sound. They have been resealed at the corners for years, they hold standing water, or the spikes have backed out of the fascia. On those, a new gutter with the guard built in costs less over its life than a guard on a gutter that has to come down in a few years.
The question page on new gutters has a short checklist you can run from the ground.
Call to install: every step
Three ways to start
- Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
- Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
- Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
Understand what you actually need
About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.
- Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
- Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
- Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
- Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
Your plan, in writing
You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.
A deposit capped at one third
Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.
Material ordered and confirmed
Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.
Scheduled with a certified installer in your county
A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.
Installed
The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.
After the install
We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:
- Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
- T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
- DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
Questions homeowners ask
Will someone come to my Darien house to sell me guards?
No. We measure the roof remotely and give you a price when you call (617) 401-9301. The certified installer comes out to do work you have already approved in writing, not to sell.
Why do you recommend T-Rex on older houses?
Because it replaces the hangers as well as adding a guard. The gutter is supported along its whole length by one rail, rather than at a spike every couple of feet, and the guard is part of that rail.
Would a gutter guard have helped in Ida?
A guard keeps leaves from blocking the gutter, which matters in any storm. In rain as heavy as Ida, the size of the gutter and downspouts matters as much, so we look at both before recommending a system.
Can you work on a Cape with dormers?
Yes. Short runs and dormer gutters are priced by the foot like any other, and the downspouts are their own line. Tell us about the dormers on the call so the measurement includes them.
When could the job be done?
In season we typically book four to six weeks out. The material is ordered and confirmed before you get a date, so the installer can keep it.
Do you install gutter covers, gutter screens or leaf guards in Darien?
Yes. Gutter covers, gutter screens, leaf guards and gutter guards are names for the same job: keeping leaves and needles out of the gutter. In Darien we install Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro over sound gutters from $18 a foot, or a new seamless gutter with T-Rex from $25 or DoublePro from $30.
