StormRail installs Alu-Rex gutter guards on Westport homes. New seamless gutters with T-Rex start at $25/ft and with DoublePro at $30/ft, and Gutter Clean Pro fits over sound gutters from $18/ft. The phone is answered any hour and the price is given on that call. A certified installer working in Fairfield County fits the job from the plan you approved in writing.

When Tropical Storm Isaias crossed Connecticut in 2020, Westport was one of the towns hit hardest, and the damage came from trees. The same trees stand over most Westport roofs, and every fall they fill the gutters below them.

Which guard for a Westport roof, and what each one costs

Two complaints come up on tree-covered lots: the gutter fills every October, and the gutter is coming off the house. A screen on top fixes the first and does nothing for the second. That is why, when the gutter needs replacing anyway, we start with T-Rex. T-Rex is the hanger and the guard in one continuous aluminum piece, running the length of a new seamless gutter. Nothing is spiked through the gutter every two feet to work loose. It costs $25 a foot in 5-inch and $29 a foot in 6-inch.

DoublePro is built the same way with a second, finer perforated layer under the first. Choose it when what lands on your roof is small: pine needles, seed pods, catkins, shingle grit. DoublePro carries a lifetime clog-free warranty, pine needles included. It costs $30 a foot in 5-inch and $34 in 6-inch.

If your gutters are newer and still sound, Gutter Clean Pro goes over them. Sound means straight, draining to the outlets and dry at the seams. It is $18 a foot over 5-inch and $20 over 6-inch. If we think your gutters will not outlast a guard, we will say so on the call rather than sell you one.

Downspouts are their own line, $14 to $16 a foot depending on size, and removing old gutter is $1 a foot when it comes down. None of that is folded into the gutter rate. The pricing page carries the same rates every caller is quoted.

Westport's houses, its floodplain and its storms

Westport is overwhelmingly a town of houses. Census estimates put about 88% of its 10,363 housing units as single-family detached, and the median one was built in 1967. More Westport housing dates from 1939 or earlier, close to 2,000 units, than from any decade since, and the 1950s and 1960s follow with about 3,000 between them. Old Hill, west of the Saugatuck River and north of the Post Road, is a historic section with many houses from the Revolutionary and Victorian eras. Greens Farms, on the east side, is the town's oldest neighborhood, and Saugatuck sits around the railroad station in the southwest.

Water is part of daily life here. Westport faces Long Island Sound to the south and borders Norwalk to the west, Wilton to the northwest, Weston to the north and Fairfield to the east. A quarter of residents, 26 percent, live inside the 100-year floodplain, and so does the train station. The floodplain was breached in 1992 and 1996, damaging private property, and the town now regulates renovations and additions to buildings in the floodplain zone. If your house is in that zone, the water you most need a gutter to deal with is the water coming off your own roof, carried well away from the foundation instead of dropped beside it.

Then the trees. During Isaias on August 4, 2020, Gov. Ned Lamont said Westport appeared to be one of the hardest-hit towns. At one point 90% of the town was without power, and the Merritt Parkway had to be shut in several places. Nearly a week later, News 12 reported about 30% of Westport still in the dark. A storm like that is a reminder of how much timber stands over the roofs, and of what a falling limb does to a gutter that hangs from a spike every two feet.

Most guards cope fine with a drizzle. Trouble starts in a downpour. For a normal year, the nearest long-record NOAA station is Bridgeport Sikorsky Memorial Airport, about 12 miles east, and its 1991-2020 normals show 44.09 inches of precipitation, 33.6 inches of snow, 10.3 days with an inch or more of rain and about 92 nights at or below freezing. Those are Bridgeport figures, not a Westport measurement, but ten real downpours a year is the test a gutter has to pass here.

If your house is in Old Hill or another historic part of town, exterior work may need the town's sign-off. We have not read the commission's rules, so check with the town before work starts and we will plan around what they tell you.

How much are gutter guards in Westport?

Per foot, installed: T-Rex with a new gutter is $25 in 5-inch and $29 in 6-inch, DoublePro is $30 and $34, and Gutter Clean Pro over existing gutters is $18 and $20. Downspouts and removal are listed on their own lines so nothing is buried.

To reach your total, we need the length of the roofline, the number of stories and a sense of the trees. We measure the roof remotely, so the number comes on the call. No one visits to sell, and the certified installer arrives with the plan you approved.

Do gutter guards help in the floodplain?

A gutter guard cannot keep a tide or a river out of a basement. What it can do is make sure the roof water goes where the downspouts send it, instead of spilling over a clogged gutter and pooling against the foundation. On a lot that already drains slowly, that matters.

So on a low lot we pay as much attention to the downspouts as to the gutter. Where do they discharge, and how far from the house? Is there room to extend them? Those questions go on the quote as their own line, priced by the foot. The downspouts page covers what we can change.

Are gutter guards worth it under mature trees?

Under mature trees they usually are, because those are the gutters that fill fastest and are hardest to reach safely. A guard does not make a roof maintenance-free. Leaves can still collect on top where the wind does not reach, and a valley may need a look after a big fall. But you stop pulling a wet mat out of the trough by hand every autumn.

Where a guard is not worth it is a house with no trees close by, or a gutter about to fail. We will tell you if either is true. The question page on whether guards are worth it sets out the trade honestly.

Call to install: every step

Three ways to start

  • Call (617) 401-9301. It is answered any hour, and a missed call gets called back.
  • Send the short form on the home page with your street address, and your number lands in your inbox.
  • Text or chat through the chat window on this site.
  1. Understand what you actually need

About fifteen minutes on the phone: the length of the roofline, the number of stories and the trees around the house. The roofline is measured remotely, so nobody comes to the house to sell. You get your price the same day, from the published per-foot rates.

    • Gutters still in good shape: Gutter Clean Pro goes over the gutters you already have, from $18/ft.
    • Gutters that need replacing: new gutters with the guard built in. T-Rex (continuous hanger) from $25/ft, or DoublePro (two filtration layers) from $30/ft.
    • Fascia that cannot be drilled: Hover Pro, quoted for your house.
    • Complex rooflines, third stories and copper are quoted separately, and we say so on the call, never after arrival.
  2. Your plan, in writing

You get a written quote and your StormRail plan: photos of your house, the system, the gutter size and your color choices. The certified installer works from that same plan, so you and the installer are never on different pages.

  3. A deposit capped at one third

Massachusetts law caps a home-improvement deposit at one third of the contract. We hold to that in every state we work in. Your quote names the exact figure before you pay anything.

  4. Material ordered and confirmed

Your Alu-Rex system is ordered through the Alu-Rex distributor and confirmed before an install date is set, so the date you get is one the material can meet.

  5. Scheduled with a certified installer in your county

A certified Alu-Rex installer working in your area takes the job, and you get the date without chasing anyone. In season we're typically booking four to six weeks out. We'd rather tell you that now than promise you Tuesday and send whoever happened to be free. Emergency work — a collapsed run, active water in the basement — gets triaged ahead of the queue.

  6. Installed

The installer fits the system on the plan you already approved. Any balance is due as your quote states.

  7. After the install

We check in after the job is done. Each system carries its own written Alu-Rex warranty:

    • Gutter Clean Pro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas
    • T-Rex: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance 25-year prorated limited
    • DoublePro: manufacturing lifetime limited, clog performance lifetime limited, including coniferous areas

Questions homeowners ask

Will a salesperson visit my Westport house?

No. We measure the roof remotely and give you the price when you call (617) 401-9301. The certified installer comes to do the work you approved in writing, not to sell.

Why do you suggest T-Rex for wooded lots?

Because it holds the gutter along its whole length with one continuous aluminum rail that is also the guard. There are no spikes every two feet to loosen under wet leaves, snow or a fallen branch.

Do I need the town's approval for gutters in Old Hill?

We have not read the town's historic district rules, so we cannot say. If your house is in Old Hill or another historic part of Westport, ask the town before work starts.

Do you work in Saugatuck and Greens Farms?

Yes. The rate per foot is the same anywhere in Westport, from Saugatuck and Greens Farms to Old Hill.

When can the work happen?

In season we typically book four to six weeks out. Material is ordered and confirmed before we give you a date, so the date holds.

Do you install gutter covers, gutter screens or leaf guards in Westport?

Yes. Gutter covers, gutter screens, leaf guards and gutter guards are names for the same job: keeping leaves and needles out of the gutter. In Westport we install Alu-Rex Gutter Clean Pro over sound gutters from $18 a foot, or a new seamless gutter with T-Rex from $25 or DoublePro from $30.
